Steve Wagner of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away at LifeCare Center of Cheyenne on Tuesday, November 18th, 2025 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.
Steve was born in Sheridan, Wyoming on May 22nd, 1955 to Chuck and Jeane Wagner. He moved with his family to Sundance, Wyoming in the Spring of 1961, then to Lovell, Wyoming in the Fall of 1961. He graduated from Lovell High School in 1973 with numerous honors and awards, especially for his exceptional track and field achievements. During his Senior year in high school, Steve set 2 school records in the discus and shot-put events that stood for over 10 years. He also attended and consistently won top placements in numerous regional invitational and State meets, including the prestigious "Meet of Champs"..
After graduation, he worked as a technician/installer for Wyoming's first cable TV company, which took him throughout Wyoming and Montana. He moved to Cheyenne in the mid - 70s to pursue an aviation career. He took various classes and courses to acquire all the necessary licenses to become an Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) at Sky Harbor, located at the Cheyenne Municipal Airport. He later also acquired his private pilot’s license and enjoyed the freedom of flying, sometimes accompanying the Wyoming Civil Air Patrol (CAP) on missions.
Steve also had a passion for speed on the ground. He built and owned several race cars over the years and raced competitively at several dragstrips in the region Including Glendive and Lewistown, Montana, as well as Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Colorado, where he won numerous events.
Steve left his AMT career to become full-time care-giver to his Mother until her passing in 2013, and then to his Father until his passing in 2018. During this time of his life, he gained the new passion of numismatics, a passion which led him to become a known and respected coin collector and dealer throughout Wyoming and Colorado. Simultaneously, he worked as a handy-man for the Nelson Museum of the West, and as security staff for various trade and coin shows held in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Steve was an avid reader with a huge passion for books and history. He considered himself to be a "patriot of the U.S. Constitution" and huge advocate of the rights of U.S. citizens. He participated in many discussions/debates on these subjects, known for being willing to listen, yet standing his ground for what he believed in. He was a gentle man with a huge heart for the needy and downtrodden, holding a fierce devotion to family, friends, country, and above all else, his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Steve is survived by his close friend, Ruth Jo Friess; sister, Charla Nelson (Bob) of Cheyenne, nephew Aaron Wagner (Lori) and great-nieces Andra & Allie Wagner, all of Cheyenne, cousins Sandra Wagner Getz (Bill) of Alamosa, Colorado and Richard Wagner (Sue) of Ft. Collins Colorado, as well as many close and devoted friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his Mother (Jeane Wagner), his Father (Chuck Wagner), and cousin Marie Wagner Baldwin.
A memorial service will be held at the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes on Tuesday, November 25th at 10:00 a.m. There will be a family and friends’ gathering immediately following the service at The Nelson Museum of the West located at 1714 Carey Ave.in Cheyenne. Graveside services are planned for a later date.
Steve’s family would like to thank the Comfort Care and Hospice staff at LifeCare Center of Cheyenne for their compassionate, kind and thoughtful care of Steve during his stay.
