Listen to Obituary

Shirley Sulzer of Hillsdale, Wy passed away peacefully in Gillette, Wy, just shy of her 92nd birthday.

Shirley was born November 6, 1933, in Denver, Colorado to Alva and Jennie Steers. She graduated from North High School in 1951.

On a winter day filled with ice skating and fun with friends, Shirley stood in the cold and waited for her ride to take her home - he never showed.

Dean, a gentleman whom Shirley was acquainted with, offered to give her a ride. That marked the start of 67 years together, full of family, memories, and love.

They married on January 15, 1953, and the next seven years blessed them with three children, Mike, Mark, and Norma.

In 1970, they moved to Cheyenne and since 1971, Hillsdale was home.

Shirley worked for and retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

She was an avid sports fan, Broncos and Rockies being her favorite. She loved reading, playing cards and working on a jigsaw puzzle and wasn’t afraid to do a crossword puzzle- in ink! If you were on Shirley’s Trivial Pursuit team, you were sure to win.

Shirley also had an open-door policy:

If you were hungry? ‘Lunch is at noon, and supper is at six.’

If you need a place to stay? ‘We have plenty of room.’

If you wanted to come over and hang out? ‘Stop in, we have snacks, soda, beer and whiskey.’

She and Dean welcomed everyone, arms wide open. She loved hosting big parties with an Old Crow and water in hand.

She is survived by her children; Mike (Diane) Sulzer, Mark Sulzer, Norma (Dave) Miller; sister, Marilyn (Jerry) Yost; grandchildren, Heather (Willy) Rhoads; Shane (Blanca) Miller; Mike (Andrea) Miller; Mindy (Chris) Patterson; Danielle Sulzer; Goddaughter, Debra (Todd) Pick Fullerton; 9 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Jennie Steers; husband, Dean Sulzer; and daughter-in-law, Pam Sulzer.

A graveside service will be held at Beth El Cemetery, Thursday, November 13th, at 1:00pm, with a reception to follow at the Airport Golf Club, 4801 Central Ave, from 2:00-5:30.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America at https://alzfdn.org.
