Scott Alan Walton passed away on August 26, 2026 following a valiant fight with cancer.
Scott was born on February 21, 1958 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leon “Howard” and Geraldine “Jerry” Walton. He was sealed to the love of his life, JeriLynne Marshall, in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 5, 1976. Together, they lived in Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming—eventually settling in Riverton where they spent 33 years and raised their five children: Holly, Derek, Ryan, Heidi, and Parker. Their marriage became the foundation of a beautiful family and a life built on faith, hard work, service, laughter, and love. Scott and Jeri retired and moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 2021.
Hard work was woven into who Scott was. He managed Smith’s grocery stores for 14 years before owning several businesses including Budget Blinds, Walton Distributing, two Dollar Discount stores, and a Ben Franklin craft store. In 2009, he began working for UPS where he remained until his retirement. Whatever the job, Scott gave it his all and instilled that same work ethic in his children.
Of all that Scott accomplished in his life, nothing meant more to him than his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and extraordinary grandfather. He loved being involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren, playing games, traveling, supporting them in their activities, or simply being wherever his family needed him. Scott didn't just tell his family that he loved them—he showed them.
Scott had a remarkable ability to notice that something needed to be done and then simply do it. He was the kind of neighbor who didn't wait to be asked for help. On any given day he might be walking someone's dog, taking out a neighbor's trash, cleaning a garage, mowing a lawn, delivering Meals on Wheels, helping one of his children with a project, or finding another quiet way to make someone's life easier. Scott never needed recognition for serving others; it was just the way he lived his life.
Scott was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a deep love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was not something he practiced only on Sundays. Throughout his life, he served in many callings, including Bishop, Bishopric Counselor, High Councilor, and Sunday School Teacher. During the last years of his life, he especially enjoyed serving alongside Jeri in the Fort Collins Colorado Temple. His faith could be seen not only in the callings he held, but in the way he lived and treated those around him.
Scott also knew how to enjoy life. He loved singing his own lyrics to the songs on the radio, golfing, fishing, and, more recently, pickleball. Family vacations were a treasured tradition long before retirement, and some of Scott's happiest memories were made traveling with family and friends. He knew that life's greatest moments were better when shared with people you love.
Scott is survived by his beloved wife, JeriLynne; their five children, Holly (Jeremy) Dockstader, Derek (Ashley) Walton, Ryan (Sandy) Walton, Heidi (Bryant) McCarty, and Parker (Katie) Walton; 20 grandchildren, Megan, Marshall, Makenzie, Hailey, Courtney, Elise, Tyler, Joel, Madison, Henry, Makelle, Jack, Zachary, Jonas, Kaden, Mila, Cori, Emmi, Quinn, and Halle; brother, Brad Walton; and sister, Karen (Ruben) Sanchez. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Jerry Walton, and his sister, Teri (Layne) Oliver.
Cancer may have brought Scott's mortal journey to an end, but it cannot diminish the life he lived or the legacy he leaves behind. His legacy lives in five children who watched their father work, serve, sacrifice, and love. It lives in his 20 grandchildren who knew how much their grandpa adored them. It lives in a wife who walked beside him through a lifetime of memories and adventures. And it lives in countless friends, neighbors, church members, and family members who were blessed because Scott noticed them, cared about them, and was willing to help.
Scott lived his life to the fullest. He loved his family fiercely, served generously, worked tirelessly, laughed often, and loved his Savior. The world is better because Scott Alan Walton was here.
