Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt) Robert J. Reed, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 83, passed away on September 26, 2025, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was born on June 18, 1942, in Tucson, Arizona, and lived a life defined by service, dedication, hard work, and compassion.
Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960, where he proudly served as an electrician. In 1966, he was deployed to Vietnam, supporting fellow service members by ensuring critical electrical systems remained operational. His commitment to excellence and leadership culminated in his retirement from the Air Force in 1980 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.
Following his military career, Robert continued serving his country as a mail handler with the United States Postal Service before returning to his lifelong trade as an electrician with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Together, his military and civilian careers spanned an extraordinary 47 years of dedicated federal service. He retired in June 2007, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, professionalism, and service to his nation.
Robert believed in hard work, personal responsibility, and doing the right thing. Growing up with humble beginnings, he never made excuses for what he did not have. Instead, he relied on determination, common sense, practical wisdom, and an unwavering work ethic to build a successful life for his family and solve almost any problem he encountered.
As a father, Robert was firm but deeply devoted to his family. He taught his sons that there were no shortcuts in life, often reminding them with his favorite saying from the old Fram oil filter commercial: "You can pay me now, or pay me later." While he expected discipline, accountability, and hard work, those lessons were always rooted in love and a desire to prepare them for life's challenges.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robert was known for his generous spirit, unwavering kindness, and deep love of animals. He found great joy in caring for his pets, spending time with his family, and quietly helping anyone in need. Whether offering a place to stay, financial assistance, practical advice, or simply a helping hand, Robert never hesitated to support those who needed him. His strength, integrity, humility, and willingness to serve others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, John Joseph Reed (1954); his mother, Marie Del Carmen Reed (1997); his stepfather, Lloyd Eugene Redman; and his younger brother, Lawrence Reed (2024).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Reed; his three sons, Glen Allen Reed and his wife, Stephanie; Scott Allen Reed and his wife, Belkis; and Christopher John Allen Reed and his wife, Michelle. He also leaves behind three cherished granddaughters, Alexis, Sierra, and Cassandra, who brought him great pride and joy. He is also survived by his nephews, Jason Reed and Justin Reed, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
