“A Rite of Passage”

Rebecca Faith Fletcher

August 18, 1953 – September 22, 2025

Rebecca, mostly known by as “Becky”, died at home just as she chose, in the early morning hours of the day with loved ones. She passed quietly and without suffering, attended to by her mother, Barbara Fletcher, brother Daniel Fletcher and sister-in- law, Pearl Fletcher.

Born in Saint Paul, Minnisota, she led the way to greet her brother a year later for whom (much to his chagrin!) she constantly referred to as her “Baby brudder” to others. Every graduate school professor, every public service official, every attorney or city official I had occasion to mingle with during my career in Los Angeles all knew to call me “baby brudder” and the nick name stuck! She never called her baby sister, Marv Krieder, baby whatever. So unfair!

Rebecca’s Mother, Barbara Ann Fletcher, and Father, John Arden Fletcher (deceased 2015) began life with their first born, Rebecca under extremely trying circumstances. Becky was a newborn with many things wrong with her. Many symptoms manifested themselves with seizures. In other instances, extreme fear reactions occurred without evident reason. Medical treatment when she was born couldn’t really do anything much except diagnose her as having tuberosclerosis, disputed in later years in favor of other evident neural abnormality equally debilitating. At birth doctors recommended that Becky be permanently institutionalized advising that she had a little under a 20 % chance of surviving to reach the age of 18 anyway. Becky’s parents thought about it for a few seconds, and brought their daughter home. Nothing would deter them from their vision of how Jesus loved the little children, even the disabled ones, and they would do no less for Becky. Manifestations of debility persisted her whole life but through the grace of God, and her family, she lived a full life.

Among the variety of jobs in her life, she spent years as a music teachers’ aide. She also worked as a Special Education aide. She did public service work for a County in New Mexico. Later in life she was becoming an artist. She drew with colored pencils, painted and prior to these she knitted as well. She played several music instruments.

Another area of growth was her great commitment to theological texts. She studied so profoundly that her knowledge might have rivaled some theologians. Born into a Quaker community, she grew to embrace Messianic Judaism and was in training to learn Hebrew. She tried for so many years to overcome her lifelong debilities, and she was still growing in her heart.

With many obstacles to cross, Rebecca was academically accomplished, achieving a Bachelor’s degree followed by a Master’s Degree in Psychology.

The path in front of her was rarely smooth and easy. This applies to her closest family members too. It was a joint adventure in love, forbearance and struggle.

She is survived by her sister, Marv Kreider and her soul mate, Cary Sodotani of Pasadena, California She is survived by her nieces, Dominique Hunter and Thnisha Hunter, both in California and April Hunter in Texas.
