Phyllis Duncan of Cheyenne passed away on May 14, 2025 at Davis Hospice.
Phyllis was born on February 20, 1933 in Cheyenne, WY to John F and Helen Crawford.
Phyllis met the love of her life, James Duncan, in high school in 1948, they married in 1950. Phyllis and Jim, had two wonderful sons, Jeffrey Duncan, born 1954, and Joseph Duncan, born 1956.
Phyllis was a very active member of the Cheyenne community throughout her life. After surviving breast cancer, she became a big supporter of The American Cancer Society and served in numerous groups and provided support to other women going through cancer. She also served on numerous committees including XJWC, Cowgirls of the West, and the Cheyenne High Class of 1951.
After the death of her husband Jim in 2012, Phyllis became an active member of the First United Methodist Church grief group where she met and formed wonderful and meaningful friendships that carried her through the 13 years without Jim.
More importantly Phyllis was very active in starting the Opportunity School for the education and development for the mentally handicapped. Phyllis’ oldest son, Jeffrey, was born profoundly mentally handicapped and she made it one of her missions to help Jeff and others like him get the help, attention and services they needed.
Phyllis worked at the Wyoming Department of Transportation in the Right of Way Department from 1969-1990, when she retired.
After retirement, Phyllis and her husband Jim, built their dream home in Cheyenne and spent their remaining years together traveling through America in their motorhome. They traveled to many beautiful places across the country; however, their absolute favorite destination was Hawaii. During their later years of traveling, Phyllis and Jim, adopted their beloved chihuahuas, Micky and Minnie, that joined them as companions on their travels. They were members of the Shy-O-Ming Tumbleweeds chapter of the Good Sam Club, The High Plains Drifters, and Family Motor Coach Association.
Phyllis is survived by son, Joseph Duncan, and wife, Pam of Westminster, CO, granddaughters, Caitlin Stallings, husband, Dustin, Sarah Duncan, and great-grandsons, Beau Stallings and Kit Stallings. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Duncan Jr. and son, Jeffrey S. Duncan.
