Norman Eugene Hauf, 83, of Cheyenne, passed at Davis Hospice on May 16, 2025. He was born on January 22, 1942, in Yoder, Wyoming to Riney Hauf and Esther (Heil) Hauf. He was the 3rd of 7 children.
Norman was a hard worker from the very beginning. Raised on the farm until age 14, he worked hard as a child, thinning beets, driving tractor, feeding animals and all the other assorted chores so many rural kids are familiar with. At age 14, his family moved to Cheyenne. Along with his little brother, Tom, and his little sister, Debbie, he formed a country band called The Hauf Brothers and Little Debbie. The trio played several night spots, including the Saratoga Inn and the Hitching Post Inn. They also played and sang songs on the radio; with their biggest success being a song titled Out Behind the Barn. They played and sang on and off for several years while Norman worked side jobs as a cook and maintenance man.
He met the love of his life, Charlotte Wunch, when they were both young teenagers. His mother went to work at the Memorial Hospital (now the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center) laundry. Charlotte’s mother was the Laundry Supervisor. They were married at a relatively young age – Norman was 17 and Charlotte was 18. The date was October 6, 1959. They were married for 65 years, until Norman passed. Norman worked at the Memorial Hospital for several years as a Maintenance Man, then went to work for the power company, where he retired after 30+ years at the young age of 55. He and Charlotte had 4 children and lived in Cheyenne their entire lives.
Norman’s second love was woodworking! There are many friends and family members who have one or many pieces of furniture – including toyboxes, curios, lamps, jewelry boxes, TV stands, cradles or other wooden objects made by Norman.
He loved working with his hands. He especially loved fixing up his house. He completely finished the basement, remodeled the kitchen – including cabinets, and added china hutches, tea carts, and a host of other wooden works of art. His backyard included window boxes, porch swing and bench, train planter boxes, and a tool shed complete with a full set of rabbit hutches, all made by his own hand. His shop was well equipped and the envy of any serious woodworker. (His name was Norm after all!)
Norman never lost his love for music. He played the guitar, mandolin, ukelele, accordion and the organ. He often got together and played with his cousin, Jim and brother, Tom for parties, events, or just for fun.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; son, Brett (Doris); daughters, Roxanne Collin (Dale) and Misty Virgin (Patrick); grandkids: Adam, Lucas, Keenan, Brittany, Hollie, Isaac, Kord, Ashlee, Amber, Aric, and Megann. He also has 16 great-grandchildren. He has two sisters, Jean and Shelly who are still living. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Candace; his mother and father; sisters, Jackeline and Debbie; and brothers, Tom and Dennis. He will be sorely missed by his surviving family and many friends.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Norman's remarkable life on August 2, 2025, at the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The memorial service will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the conclusion scheduled for 11:00 a.m., as we gather to pay tribute to a life richly lived and loves deeply shared.
