Kathryn Eileen Cooper was born on March 6, 1943, to John J. and Velma I. Rooney. She grew up alongside four sisters and one brother and attended St. Mary’s High School in Cheyenne. Her Catholic faith remained an important part of her life, and she was a devoted lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s Cathedral.
On October 31, 1964, Kathy married Hugh “Butch” Cooper at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Together, they made their home in Cheyenne, where they raised their family. Their lives were marked by both deep love and profound loss, including the heartbreaking death of their beloved daughter, Lizzie, from cancer as a teenager. Through it all, Kathy remained devoted to caring for and supporting her family, creating a home grounded in love, loyalty, strength, and togetherness.
Kathy later joined the family business, Allied Interstate Moving and Storage, where she worked as the bookkeeper and played an important role in helping operate the business. She remained dedicated to both her family and her work throughout her career before eventually retiring with Butch in Cheyenne.
Above all, Kathy was a devoted, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Her grandchildren held a very special place in her heart, and she took great pride in each of them. She treasured being part of their lives, hearing about what they were doing, and watching them grow into the people they became. They could always count on Grammy for encouragement, wisdom, lively conversation, and her unmistakable sense of humor. Known for her quick wit and thoughtful observations, Kathy had a way of making time spent together memorable. Her strength, loyalty, and deep love for her family will live on through the many memories they shared and the lasting influence she had on those she loved.
Kathy passed away peacefully in the early afternoon of August 14, 2026, at her son’s home, surrounded by her three surviving children.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh “Butch” Cooper; her daughter, Elizabeth M. Cooper; her parents, John and Velma Rooney; her sister, Margaret Rooney; and her brother, John Rooney Jr.
Kathy is survived by her children, Ann Margaret Burns, Patrick Cooper, and Eileen Zofcin; her sisters, Armena Taylor, Velma Bain, and Regina Rooney-Ogden; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Kathy’s life was rooted in faith, family, hard work, and love. Those who knew her will remember her wisdom, humor, conversation, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. She will be deeply missed and remembered by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
