John Donald Schantz, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at the age of 78. Born on July 5, 1947, in Clarinda, Iowa, John lived a life rich with experiences, warmth, and love.

John was educated in a one-room schoolhouse before transferring to the Stanton School system, ultimately graduating from Red Oak High School in May 1965. Shortly after, he answered the call of duty, being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served honorably at Ft. Bliss in Texas and Ft. Carson in Colorado, before his discharge on October 4, 1967.

Building a career as a surveyor, John first worked for Montgomery County, Ioway, balancing his professional life while engaging in furniture refinishing on the side with Peggy.

John's personal life flourished when he wed Peggy Schantz on June 21, 1995. Together, they nurtured a loving home, enjoying so many summers, holidays, and special moments with all of their beloved children and grandchildren. John and Peggy’s greatest adventure was moving to the wild west of Wyoming. There they enjoyed bird watching, garage sales, and long drives through the beautiful landscapes in Wyoming. They were also blessed to form a special bond with Caroline and Katherine Sandburg whom they nannied for many years, treating them as beloved granddaughters. John's devotion to family was evident, flourishing with visits during holidays, particularly Cheyenne Frontier Days and Thanksgiving.

His interests and hobbies played an integral role in shaping who he was. Known for his skillful play in pool and snooker, John earned numerous trophies for his achievements in tournaments and continued to share this passion in leagues throughout Wyoming. A member of the Elks Club in Red Oak, Iowa, he held the title of Exalted Ruler during his time there. John also embraced his love for golfing, pheasant hunting, and fishing, often sharing these joyful pursuits with Peggy on their many excursions, including trips to Iowa and leisurely drives around their surroundings.

John is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Schantz; his brothers, Dean (Gena) Schantz and Roger (Amy) Schantz; and cherished family members, including Shannon (Sheryl) Bergren, along with their daughters Hannah and Lillian Bergren; Angie (Jacques) Beveridge, and their daughters Ellie and Ava Beveridge; Amanda (Nick) Christensen, along with their sons Grant and Ryan Christensen; and Jessica Pierson and special friend David Smith, and Jessica's children Marley Pierson-Paris and Talon Paris. John is also mourned by a wealth of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews who carry his memory forward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Vernon Schantz and Marjorie Schantz, and a nephew, Kristofer Schantz.

As a testament to his life and legacy, a small family service will be held in Wyoming, with online services available for those unable to attend in person. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all relatives and friends for their support during this time.
