James (Jim) Burness Holland, 81, passed away the afternoon of Wednesday, February 11, 2026. He died comfortably and peacefully in his hospice bed, surrounded by family, friends, conversation and laughter. Born in Ames, Iowa on November 18, 1944, to Burness and Viola Holland, James grew up in small towns in Iowa until he enlisted in the Army. He served during the Vietnam era in the communications field and was able to use his training from the Army to work for the phone company for 31 years. After retirement, Jim was able to fulfil more than one dream by becoming an over-the-road truck driver for over 10 years. He made it to all 48 contiguous states thanks to "semi-retirement." Jim loved playing his guitar and singing classic country songs. His love of firearms and teaching people about his guns and gun safety brought him so much joy. He also enjoyed reloading ammunition for them. Jim had a special ability to make friends anywhere he went. Standing 6'4" with big Norwegian features could seem slightly intimidating, but he was secretly a huge teddy bear. His heart was bigger than he was tall. He had a great love and special bond with animals, especially the dogs he happily called his “Road Dogs”. Jim is survived in life by his adoring wife of 55 years, Cora Marie (Kothenbeutel); children, Robert James and Jill Marie; sister, Marilyn (Pottorff); grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burness and Viola; and his son, Lee Charles.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, March 13, 2026, at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel at 2:00 p.m.
Considering his love of animals, in lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter.
