Listen to Obituary

With deep sorrow and profound respect, we honor the life of Gloria Jean Elizabeth McQuilkin, who departed this world on March 31, 2026, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Born the second oldest of 8 children on May 1, 1952, in Plattsburgh, New York, Gloria’s journey was marked by a steadfast spirit.

Gloria devoted much of her life to serving others as a waitress and bartender, roles in which her radiant laughter left lasting impressions on all who had the joy of knowing her. Though her formal education concluded after the sixth grade, her wisdom and grace surpassed any measure confined by classroom walls.

Her passions were as varied as they were cherished—Gloria found delight in collecting owls, engaging in the calming art of coloring books, embroidering and quilting, cooking fry bread and her coleslaw was legendary at the potlucks! These hobbies reflected her ability to weave beauty and comfort, not only through fabric and thread but also within the lives of those around her.

Anyone who knew Gloria knew she called everyone "hun", including her favorite regulars. Gloria's favorite holiday was Christmas and was very generous in gift giving. Her and Mac would dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause and he would always put up her Christmas tree which she greatly enjoyed through the season.

A cornerstone of her life was her enduring marriage to Garth “Mac” McQuilkin, whom she married on December 17, 1982. Together, they journeyed through 43 years of shared love and companionship, moving to Thunderbasin in 1986 and making Burns, Wyoming their beloved home. Their union stood as a testament to devotion and partnership, a beacon of steadfast love in a changing world.

Gloria’s family was her greatest treasure. She leaves behind her loving husband Mac of Burns, Wyoming; her son Jeff Ray Abare of New York; her daughter Mona Bennor of New York; her stepson Shane McQuilkin of Burns, Wyoming, Colorado; and her stepdaughter Heather Romero, also of Ft. Collins. Her Sister Cindy, whom she called every Sunday and was very close with, along with other siblings. She was a cherished companion to many friends whose lives she touched deeply. Her heart also extended to her two beloved dogs, Harley, a spirited Yorkie, and Merlin, a noble Great Pyrenees-Mastiff mix, who brought joy and comfort to her days.

Although she struggled with muscular dystrophy that left her in a wheelchair, she persevered through life gracefully. She is lovingly remembered after her passing by those who survive her, and her memory will forever be honored and held dear. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Simpson and Elizabeth Benway, whose legacy lives on in her and in the hearts of all she loved.

A celebration of life will be at the Antelope Truck stop announced at a later date.
