Listen to Obituary

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Gary E. Schmidt, 76, on November 25, 2025, in Cheyenne, with his wife and sister by his side.

Gary was born September 24,1949 in Ogden, Utah, to Gerhard and Margaret Schmidt. He was the oldest of five siblings.

Gary met his wife Rosie in Salt Lake while they were both working for Grand Central. They became the best of friends. They married on October 10,1971, in Las Vegas. They welcomed their daughter, Shelby while still in Salt Lake. Gary was transferred as store manager with Grand Central to Cheyenne in 1976. It was this same year that they were blessed with their son Colby. He worked many different jobs over the years, with most of them being in sales. He retired from Lowes DC in 2023.

He enjoyed trips with his family, summers in the hay field, hunting and fishing, watching the Denver Broncos, endless trips driving while his children competed in skating competitions, and visiting with family and friends.

Later in life Gary and Rosie became season ticket holders for UW football, going to several games and especially enjoying the games spent with their grandson Paden while he attends University there. Gary made many friends while completing the beer tour at Old Chicago and spending Friday nights with friends at the Plaza.

One of the greatest joys in Gary’s life was his grandchildren and especially his adorable great-granddaughters. He would show everyone their pictures if given the chance.

Gary will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Rosie of 54 years, his daughter Shelby (Stacy) Knull, granddaughters Dakota (Travis) Houston and Delanie (Riley) Ferguson and grandson Paden Knull, twin great granddaughters Leighton and Bristol Ferguson, brothers Kevin (Sue), Rob (Brent Moosman) and sister JoAnn (Bruce) Cummings, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Colby Schmidt, mother Margaret Schmidt, brother Doug Schmidt and sister-in-law Babe Wareham.

We would like to thank the doctors and amazing nurses on the ICU floor at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for going above and beyond in support and care of Gary and his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held May 2, 2026.
