Listen to Obituary

Gary L. Kautzman, 81, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away peacefully at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on August 21, 1944, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to Eugene (Gene) and Katherine (Katie) Kautzman. As a child, he moved with his family to Sidney, Montana, where he created many fond memories riding his bike and spending time with friends. He graduated from Sidney High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving one tour and traveling the world.

After his honorable discharge, Gary attended Eastern Montana College in Billings, Montana, where he earned a degree in mathematics and history. Gary married Debra Hayden in 1970 and they had 3 children; 1 daughter and 2 sons. He began his career working at a power plant in Billings, Montana, and in 1977 the family moved to Gillette, Wyoming. There, he worked at the WyoDak Power Plant for 22 years. Following his retirement, Gary stayed active through various pursuits, including substitute teaching and surveying oil fields.

In 2001, Gary moved to Cheyenne to be closer to his children and grandchildren, a decision that brought him great joy. He was an active member of the Catholic Church community and enjoyed reading, traveling, and talking about history. He also loved watching history-based movies and was a devoted supporter of his grandchildren, rarely missing their plays, music performances, and sporting events.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Shawna Peña (Nate); his sons, Scott Kautzman (Jessica) and Craig Kautzman; and his cherished grandchildren: Quinlan Kautzman (Eva), Raegan Kautzman, Aidan Kautzman, Averi Kautzman, Evan Kautzman, Tarin Peña, Logan Kautzman, and Connor Peña; and great granddaughters: Alexandra Kautzman and Charlotte Kautzman. He is also survived by his sister, Kathy Tobin, his niece Shannon Tobin, and his nephew Ryan Tobin; and nephews Alan Kautzman and Larry Kautzman; among several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene Kautzman and Katie Butka (Lloyd); his brother Gene Kautzman; his brother-in-law Vince Tobin; and many beloved cousins, aunts, and uncles.
