Listen to Obituary

DeVona Rea Weeks, 83, of Cheyenne, passed away on February 22, 2025, at Beehive Homes in Albuquerque, NM surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 22, 1941, in Dimmitt, TX to Ray Stevens McEntire and Myrtle (Christine) Bagwell McEntire. Her legacy is one of love, teaching, and caring with her kindness touching everyone she encountered. She continued to thank the staff consistently at Morada Memory Care where she lived for nearly four years, telling them what a fantastic job they were doing and thanking them for helping her.

DeVona was a long-time educator, having spent 40 years with Goshen County School District, teaching generations in LaGrange, WY and finishing her career in Torrington, WY. Only a few know that she was the Pep Club sponsor and even a volleyball coach at one time. She attempted to demonstrate strictness once by giving her one and only daughter detention!

DeVona was a member of Cheyenne Baptist Temple and spent many years in service with the church, teaching Sunday School, creating bulletin boards, performing outreach with frogs (Fully Rely on God), and so much more. She had been a member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).

DeVona had many titles throughout her life including Mrs. Weeks, DeVona, mom, and Grandma. She loved that “extra” kids called her mom. Her unwavering dedication to family and friends led her on adventures to Texas, California, Iowa, Virginia, Washington DC, New Mexico, and Colorado. She was also an international traveler with yearly trips to England and a special trip to France while her daughter and family were stationed overseas.

She was sentimental and kept many treasures. Among these were drawings her grandkids had given her tucked away in unusual places and all the gifts those who held a sacred place in her heart had ever given her. She especially loved homemade gifts. Her room in memory care displayed a cross-stitch/embroidered piece made by a cousin who sews using her mouth, a Christmas wreath made by another cousin that incorporated puff-ball bears that her Grandmother Bagwell had made, and a painting done for that same grandmother by her Uncle Hubert McEntire. She also had a church painting and a “critter” angel that were made by her brother. She was always so proud of all her family! Her biggest claim to literal fame is being related to Reba and Susie McEntire. She saw Susie several times when she performed in Cheyenne at Frontier Days and had the pleasure of meeting her in person.

DeVona was known for her dedication to her family. She is survived by her daughter Deborah Batchelar (spouse Chris); grandchildren Andrianna Batchelar, Justin Batchelar, and Cassandra Batchelar (spouse Zachary Schwartzman); her great grandson Zander Richard Campbell; brother Larry McEntire (spouse Cheryl); nieces Megan (son Jody) and Lauren McEntire; as well as by her aunt, LaTrelle Bagwell, and many cousins.

DeVona was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Richard Weeks, her parents Ray McEntire and Christine Bagwell McEntire Bell, and several aunts, uncles, cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. immediately followed by a reception at Cheyenne Baptist Temple in Cheyenne, WY.
