Dennis grew up and attended school in Grover Colorado where he participated in basketball, football and tom foolery. The Grover High School six-man football team won the State Championship in 1954, his senior year. He was invited to Colorado State University spring football practice after his high school graduation.
Dennis enlisted in the Army 7th infantry division in 1956 and went to Fort Ord in California for Boot Camp then was stationed at Fort Knox before serving in Korea. He was honorably discharged in January 1962.
Upon returning home he worked as a gandy dancer for the railroad, on the oil rigs, and other odd jobs. He married Maxleene Robertson on September 9, 1960. Together they raised four children; Stacy Goodwine, Kathy Cathcart (Paul), Tracy Fogg (Keith) and Patrick Goodwine (Heather). He and Maxleene lived in Laramie for a short while before moving to Cheyenne to raise their family. In 1963, they purchased their family home, with the down payment funded through plumbing work Dennis and his brother Cliff completed on numerous homes in the Sun Valley neighborhood.
Dennis was accepted to the apprenticeship for the Plumber and Pipefitters Union 192 in 1960. He received several awards before graduating as Journeyman Plumber in 1965. He worked in Laramie as a plumber for PS Cook on the University of Wyoming campus and in Scottsbluff on the hospital.
He was elected to Recording Secretary in1968, and President in 1970 to 1976 for the Plumbers/Pipefitters Union local 192 then elected Business Agent in 1976 and served 3 consecutive terms as business agent. He was not elected for a fourth term and returned to working as a journeyman plumber for 3 years before being asked to run again for the business agent position and returning to that position for a fourth term before retiring.
He held various positions for the Wyoming state AFL-CIO WY Executive Board including Board President and Vice President, UA representative for Wyoming, Health and Welfare Insurance board member.
Dennis was a Union man through and through. He assisted in filling thousands of jobs through the years with men that he was proud to call lifelong friends.
When Dennis retired he and his son Patrick started the Double Bar G (=G) Rodeo bucking bull business. Along with Maxleene, their son Patrick and his wife Heather, and their daughters, Stacy and Kathy, he helped establish the Friday Night Rodeo Series with the Pine Bluffs Team Roping Club in 1996 and continued their involvement until Maxleene's passing in 2016. =G also produced the Barrels and Bulls series at the Archer complex for five years. He and Patrick hauled bulls far and wide to many many rodeos. They worked with Burns Rodeo Company, a PRCA stock contracting company owned and operated by Hal and Pete Burns. They provided bucking bulls to rodeos in the region.
Dennis went to the gym almost every day, he made many lifelong friends that he spent time talking to on the phone or visiting with these past few months when he was recuperating from a fall (or two… or three) and during his hospice.
Dennis attended the activities of his grandchildren Candi Greiss (Mark), JD Cathcart (Debbie), Jordan Wittmann (Lee Sexton), and Jacob Fogg (Jessica) and great-grandchildren: DC Cathcart (JD), Riggin Cathcart (JD) , Cade Wittmann (Jordan), Hyde Greiss (Candi), AshtonBelle Cathcart (JD), Novella Greiss (Candi), Jamison Fogg (Jake), Jeremiah Fogg (Jake), Dayne Wilshusen (JD) and Marilyn Wilshusen (JD). He traveled many miles to watch football, wrestling, baseball, soccer and rodeo. He loved to watch the videos of their bull and saddle bronc rides if he couldn’t be there in person. He spent hours just visiting with them, telling stories and listening to theirs.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
