Obituary for Sally J. Meyer

Sally Fields Jackson Meyer, 90, died December 2, 2017 at Davis Hospice Center.
She was born August 22, 1927 in Demopolis, Alabama, to Sam and Dixie Jackson.
Sally was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class and continued her education for two years at Judson College, Marion, Alabama. She went on to complete her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a Masters Degree.
Sally began her teaching career in the Gadsdon Alabama High School. After completing two years there, she came to Cheyenne High School, later Cheyenne Central High School, where she remained for thirty- four years, retiring in 1987.
Sally was respected, for her superb English grammer knowledge, by numerous students and teacher colleagues. Many will remember this wonderful teacher as Sally Allard until this beautiful, marvelous lady married Duane Meyer on November 27, 1985.
Following this marriage, Sally became an active member of Zion Congregational Church. She sang in the choir and served in leadership positions of the Church Board and Women’s Fellowship Group. For a time she attended and was active with the Retired Educators Association. Sally was a fifty-seven year member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators. She was active and participated in chapter meetings until her health made it difficult to attend.
As a child, Sally listened to the radio broadcasts of the New York Yankee baseball games. A loyal fan, she enjoyed viewing games when they became televised. She was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide football and equally avid North Carolina Tar Heels basketball enthusiast.
Sally was a loving, caring lady. When her mother began to experience Alzheimer’s disease, Sally closed the mother’s Alabama home and brought her to Cheyenne to provide the necessary care. While teaching school each day, Sally provided the care for her mother at home, evenings and weekends, for a period of six years.
A true animal lover, Sally’s first childhood dog, a spitz named “Shibby”, would attempt to follow her to school twice each day. Sally especially loved Old English Sheepdogs and had six of them in her adult years.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents and an older sister Dixie. She is survived by her husband Duane, one nephew, and numerous devoted cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel. Interment will follow at Beth El Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Zion Congregational Church, Davis Hospice Center or favorite charity of your choice.
